General Translation:
The interviewer 1st brings up the topic of choosing friends.
Leslie says one of the most important things for him is that a person is not nosy. After being in the entertainment industry for over 20 years, one can spot insincerity instantly. He says his requirements for friendship are high, and therefore does not have that many friends. He especially dislikes people that look you up and down from head to toe to see what you are wearing first, he finds this cheap.
One of Leslie’s friends is Tony Leung Chiu Wai, and they worked together several times. They are good friends, even though they don’t see each other often.
Leslie says that Tony has a strange character, but is a very sincere and good person. Maggie chimes in and says Tony is like a child.
Leslie then talks about the time he was shooting Happy Together in Buenos Aires, Argentina; how he got bacteria in the stomach, and how if it wasn’t for Tony’s help, he wouldn’t have made it.
Maggie asked Leslie, before you went to Argentina, didn’t you prepare health-wise. Leslie answered no he didn’t, he didn’t think of it, after all, this was South America, how dangerous could it be, it’s not India or Africa. Tony Leung Ka Fai said well, South America would be a little more dangerous.
When Leslie first got to Argentina, he wasn’t shooting right away, so he was going out for meals. By the 3rd day, he had diarrhea, and thought he just wasn’t used to the food, and he isn’t known to have a strong stomach anyway.
3 days later, Tony arrived in Argentina. Leslie mentioned his condition to him, and Tony said he had pills that Leslie could take. Leslie took them, and things seemed fine. But when Leslie stopped taking them, the problems came back.
Then one day, Leslie, William Chang and Tony went out for an Italian meal, and Leslie felt something was really wrong. He said he’s the type of person who’ll only go to the hospital as a last resort. So at the hospital, they gave Leslie some liquid to drink, and things stopped. But after Leslie stopped taking the liquid, things started up yet again.
Leslie started to think that this was really strange, and by this time 2 or 3 weeks had gone by. One day, Leslie told Tony that he really felt that something was wrong, and said he was thinking that maybe he got some kind of bacteria in the stomach. A thought which had just occurred to him.
Tony replied that it was crazy. This is Argentina – Buenos Aires. It is by the sea, not by a river, and you get bacteria from river water. Then Leslie said, well bingo, we are by the river. And Tony said “Really ?!?! Okay, I’m going to call my doctor (and good friend) Tim in Hong Kong. I have a night shoot, and you don’t, so you go ahead and rest, and I’ll let you know in the morning – don’t worry, it’ll be fine”. Then at 6 am in the morning Tony pounded on Leslie’s door and told him, yep, you’ve got bacteria.
Leslie said that it’s very difficult to get close to Tony, but Tony is a very, very good person. |
