Dear fellow fans and film friends -
If you are interested you can follow the current Cannes Festival - daily (in various languages)
http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/festival/officialSelection.html
click: "follow the festival hour by hour" on the right side, then the date on the calendar - click on the film and go on left side with "videos"......
You can watch videos from Red Carped, Press Conference ......of every film already shown .
For my Japanese Friends : See Takeshi Kitano´s "Outrage" Pressconference - for example - you will better understand his jokes.
To whet your appetite for Cannes 2011 - haha -
Maybe next year with Tony and the "Grand Master" ?
Have fun !

Dear Helga,
Thank you so much for your information of Cannes.
I'm interested in Cannes Film festival every year.
Takeshi Kitano's ''Outrage'' has already become the topic in Japan.
I bought an advance ticket,too.
In fact, I'm weak in the violence movies, but I'm interested in the director and actors in this movie.
So I'm looking forward to watch it in next month.
But
I hope that we can watch the ''Grand Master''as the movie of competition
section next year .
And also meet our Grand Master and his director in Cannes.

Hello anny - glad to see you again !
In the "Pressconference"-video I watched Kitano doing some jokes in case of the violence in his Yakuza films - he explained to try new progresses and ways to his former ones.............with actors that usual play other roles.......if I understood correct.
I do not know many of his films, but I like him as director and actor.
Wish you a pleasant screening - ( hope not too brutal and bloody for your taste).
To watch WKW´s and Tony´s "Grand Master" in Cannes 2011 ( if it is in the competition next year ) would be GREAT , but I fear there will be no chance to get any tickets for "ordinary people" like us.
To be realistic : Even to watch the actors and directors.... on the Red Carpet .... might be very difficult on the Promenade de la Croisette.
Let´s wait and see - and hope !

Hi everyone,
I’d like to watch Mike Leigh’s "Another Year" among this year’s competition.
I hope Ken Loach’s and Lee Chang-dong’s latest films will be in theater in Japan.
I’m not a very big fan of Kitano’s films. I think other new film directors should be given
chance to present their works . But the film festival like Cannes, it will be difficult ….
Helga, what you heard at Kitano’s press conference is correct. He’s saying he tried to
make a different type of gang movie compared to his past gang movies.

I don’t think tickets will be available and it’ll be difficult to see the guests on the red carpet.
But when I was in Cannes during the film festival season ( a long time ago),
many movie stars were having interviews in hotel’s garden where I was staying.
So you never know you might get a chance to see them.
Oh , I have to brush up my rusty French, then. hahaha…I hope EURO is stable at that time, too.
International fun meeting in Europe will be fun, too.
Of course, it can be held in Montreal or Toronto etc. etc.! Why Not?
Have a nice weekend !

Hello and Thank you, Yuka !
You are right missing more new, young or unknown directors from Japan or other countries.
Though Cannes tries an "innovative selection" every year, it is fact to be a more "sophisticated "(snobby ?) festival.
Not only the real celebrities and VIP´s , but also a lot of wannabes want to be seen with the "stars" and catched by aggressive cameras and press...... (and - in the same week - at the "Grand Prix of Monaco")
You can imagine: that bumps up the prices........one of the reasons we mostly bypassed Cannes (in festival time) on our beloved France holidays - nevertheless Cannes is Cannes and you will like it !
But do not worry, with your YEN, you will not have any problems - need not be afraid at all - haha
I know, it depends on WKW and Tony and nomination......., but if you, your friends and other fellow fans plan to meet at the festival next year, you can take my presence quite for granted. I´ll do my best to join - (and HK is on my personal "waiting-position" further on)
BTW : your "rusty French": I´ll have the chance to try/refresh my poor "school-french" next days as travelling "Nomads" in Corsica.
Have a nice weekend too !

For Cannes , I'm much more interested in Award for Best Screenplay/Director ,
and Un Certain Regard Prize .
It's difficult to balance between commercialism and artistic quality.
May be there's no need to think of balancing them, but
movie distibutors tend to avoid taking risks in buying films which
is more art oriented ..(of course ,if director or casts are well known,
it's different ....) I hope I can get to see films with wide variety and substantial quality.
Helga, are you travelling to Corsica? Please send me some photos( in bathing suits??) if you have time !
By the way, my French is ”kindergarten” French ... ha ha ha.
Bon Voyage ! |

Hi Suellen,
I’m not sure which country bought Outrage (or “The Outrage”)It will be in theater in Japan from June 12.
Japanese trailer is full of guys in black suites intimidating each other.
I’m sure it’s not a date movie. I’m curious how it’ll be received by the audiences.
Last week, I saw” Le Concert” by Radu Mihaileanu. It was quite good. I enjoyed it.

I finally saw the "hurt locker" on DVD. Not bad at all, made you think you were right there in the thick of the war by using the experiences of a small group of soldiers doing one specific function. It was helpful to see a documentary on the mental health issues of soldiers returning from Iraq at the same time.
Also saw "JCVD" on DVD which was a very funny black comedy based surrealistically on Jean Claude van damm's own life. Cute little movie. _________________ suellen |

I liked"Hurt Locker" too. I think soldiers mentalities are well written by focusing on a small
group of soldiers working on one mission.
Last night, I bumped into SATC 2 ‘s Premiere in Roppongi, Tokyo. I heard it’s their last premiere here(NY-LDN-Tokyo)
4 main casts(actresses) were on the stage. There were a huge crowd (girls girls girls..and many non Japanese fans, too)
I know TV series are very popular worldwide but didn’t expect they draw such a huge crowd of fans !
I couldn’t even just cross the street and was very late for the appointment. haha
(But what surprised me the most is that our prime minister has stepped down, again ! Unbelievable …) |

Yuka,
So what did your prime minister do that he needed to resign? Anything exciting?
I've only watched the sex and the city tv series if it happened to be on just before I fell asleep. So I really haven't kept up with the story line. So I haven't gotten all that excited about the 2 movies. Also, my husband thinks it's a chick flick so I'll probably never get to see it.... _________________ suellen

Hi Suellen and everyone,
He hasn’t done ANYTHING exciting that’s why he had to quit. He couldn’t implement his political manifesto.
( e.g. diplomatic, economic issues, etc.etc.)
I’ve watched some of SATC TV series. But for the movie, (I know there’re many SATC fans out there)
this isn’t my type of movie which I pay to watch. There’s a lot more for me to see and choose.
Talking about soldier’s mentality in previous post, PTSD is one of the issues in “Brothers “by Jim Sheridan.
I didn’t realize until I went to a theater this is a remake for Sussane Bier’s Brothers which I saw several years ago.
I think original Danish version is much better, but child actor who’s playing a little daughter is excellent in Jim Sheridan’s version.

Yes, I remember that the movie "Brothers" was being advertised as playing at the movie theatres - the one with Jake Gillenhall. Haven't seen it yet.
I did see Ironman 2 in May. Mickey Rourke didn't seem as tacky as I thought he would look in that type of movie. _________________ suellen |
