Hearing what Ang Lee has to say about Eileen Chang and what a great writer she is has made me curious about Chinese literature. What other writers are there to read who have been translated into English (20-21st century and historical). I don't even know where to start. Growing up in the 60s, during the height of the Cultural Revolution and the Vietnam War, no one ever mentioned China and literature (or culture, for that matter) in the same breath. I have some rather large cultura lacunae to fill. Whatever suggestions you have, I would appreciate. I can get books from a major research university in my town, so the suggestions don't all have to be currently in print.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Marie
