Red Cliff web site releases

The highly-anticipated blockbuster "Red Cliff" directed by John Woo launched its official web site, Wednesday in Beijing. Supplementing the pre-release promotion are a series of related events before the film hits the cinema in July.

Director John Woo and his leading actor Zhang Fengyi gave presentations at the launch of the film's web site. For the first time clips of the film were released to media. The trailer was produced too early to preview some of the film's biggest scenes. It did provide a glimpse of the films costume and props for a story about events in China between 184 and 280 AD.

The inspiration for the film is "Romance of Three Kingdoms" considered among China's four most important works of ancient literature. It tells amazing tales of the era when China was divided into the three kingdoms of Wei, Shu and Wu. The vast 600-year-old novel has been a favorite for many generations and a popular focus on screen.

Many wonder what John Woo has in store for the audience.

John Woo said, "Each director has his or her own style. The story I want to tell about the three kingdoms will not be very fancy. The figures in our film even don't have that kind of helmet. But we care more about the inside of each character, the interior person. We have done a lot of research. I use my emotions to feel the ancient figures' thought. It's a kind of adaptation but won't run far away from the history or the truth. "

It's said Woo has added his classic scene of flying pigeons again. He used it in his early film "A Better Tomorrow" which established his reputation.

John Woo said, "I couldn't put any guns into the film. But I kept the pigeons there. You will see Zhuge Liang let pigeons go and fly away for three times. I can't help doing this."

The opening of the web site reveals only the story of Cao Cao, one of the three most powerful leaders. Later another two tales, about Sun Quan and Liu Bei will soon be added.

"Red Cliff" to embark voyage to Cannes

It's still two months before the public release of John Woo's "Red Cliff". The high-profile production plans a visit to Cannes for the upcoming film festival.

Producer Terence Chang and lead actor Hu Jun showed up at the press conference. Hu plays general Zhao Yun in the production by the internationally acclaimed John Woo.

It took eight months to finish all his scenes. That's longer than planned. But Wood says the extension was due to Hu's excellent performance. The battle of Changbanpo, is a key part of the plot and took up a good deal of the production time.

Hu Jun, Actor, said, "We spent about three seasons shooting that part. The director and producer were impressed by Zhao Yun, and added weight to the role. We started in the spring and filmed through summer and fall."

Posters been released to the public seems to enhance the stature of Zhao Yun. The new image sets a stark contrast to previous versions adaptations.

Hu Jun, Actor, said, "It's totally different from the image of Zhao Yun in former TV drama, which has left deep impression to the audience. The latest one has the feel of wildness. It echoes with the storyline. General Zhao Yun is subordinate to Liu Bei, ruler to the Shu Kingdom. He led on the army to battle around and had no fixed residence. I think the artistic design has made a great effort in conceiving the image."

"Red Cliff" will make its debut appearance in Cannes on Saturday the 17th, beginning with a ten-minute trailer. The film's director will lead the cast along the red carpet. The movie is set to hit Chinese cinemas on July the 10th.

John Woo's new film boasts 'biggest action sequence ever'
Thu, 22 May 2008 09:27p.m.

Renowned Hong Kong director John Woo was joined by Tony Leung and fellow cast members in Cannes this week for their highly anticipated big budget Chinese blockbuster, Red Cliff.

The movie marks Woo's return to Chinese film after directing Hollywood films such as Broken Arrow, Face/Off and Mission: Impossible II.

His latest offering is an historical epic set in 208AD when the Han Empire was falling while China was controlled by warlords.

Northern warlord Cao Cao leads his troops marching to the south in an attempt to take over, only opposed by Sun Quan and Lui Bei who set up an alliance to defend their territories.

During the battle, 2,000 ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed forever. A huge undertaking for any director.

"I want to make this as the biggest action sequence ever before," Woo told AP Entertainment. "18 years ago I did try to make this movie but it was hard because it was hard to get the finance, we also didn't get a good location to do it. Now it's different. We had a lot of great support from everywhere so it can make my dream come true."

Red Cliff is scheduled for release in July 2008.
