SHANGHAI movie buffs have thrown caution to the winds by racing to buy tickets for the opening weekend of director Ang Lee's spy thriller movie "Lust, Caution," which starts screening tomorrow.

Tonight, director Lee and actors Tang Wei and Leehom Wang will meet fans at the premiere at Shanghai Film Art Center after they walk the red carpet. But Hong Kong actor Tony Leung, who plays the lead role, can't be there due to his tight schedule, officials said.

Though the mainland version will have seven minutes cut from the 156-minute full version, including some explicit sex scenes and violence, fans are still keen.

"Film buffs were in long queues to buy the tickets," said Li Lan, manager of Yonghua Cinema. "Some companies and film fan clubs are calling in advance. So far tickets for five screenings have been reserved."

Li predicted that the movie would be a hit due to its international success. It won the top Golden Lion award at the recent Venice Film Festival.

Yan Mingfang, general manager of Broadband International Cineplex, said the movie would have more than 20 screenings per day at his cinema.

"We have already sold 240,000 yuan (US$32,000) worth of pre-screening tickets," Yan said. "Feedback from the audience over the film's opening weekend will be vital to its future performance at the box office."

Qiu Zhonglin, a 27-year-old accountant, said he and his girlfriend would not miss the film this week. "We are very curious. It's been released in North America and in Taiwan and Hong Kong," he said. "We've been waiting a long time to see it."

Based on Shanghai writer Eileen Chang's novel, the movie revolves around a group of revolutionary students bent on killing a powerful political figure who collaborates with invading Japanese forces during World War II. It will be shown in Chinese with both English and Chinese subtitles.

In 2001, Lee's Oscar-winning kung fu flick "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" only took 15 million yuan in ticket sales when it was released on the Chinese mainland.

However, Zhang Yimou's 360-million-yuan film "Curse of the Golden Flower" made nine million yuan in Shanghai's cinemas alone on its opening weekend last December. Its total box office on the Chinese mainland during the opening weekend was near 100 million yuan.
