The Leonard Lopate Show
Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution"Cultural Exchanges
Friday, September 28, 2007
Director Ang Lee discusses his latest film, "Lust, Caution." And a documentary filmmaker traces the troubled history of three Southern counties where whites systemically banished African-Americans residents around the turn of the 20th century. On today's Please Explain, we'll learn the value of a dollar as our experts tell us all about currency rates. But first, a local filmmaker reveals how one once-impoverished Brooklyn neighborhood is reacting to gentrification. Amy Eddings sits in for Leonard today.

|
|
The French film criticism website filmsactu.com has posted a lengthy (10:13mn) interview (in english) with Ang Lee in which he discusses Tony (in answer to two questions: 1) "The character of Mr. Yee is shown as a human being and not a monster. How was this received in China?" and 2) "Was it hard to convince Tony Leung to take the part?") and lauds his unique contribution to the making of the film. This interview is, I think, unique, because it includes multiple clips of the first sex scene and several of the second one, onviously released with the blessing of Focus features (the interviewer is a well-known French movie critic). Other footage of Tony during takes with Tang Wei is included. Ang's Answers (and the footage he provided to show with his comments) testify to his trust in the sophistication of the French audience, which venerates him and has long adored Tony, known to the French as "l'acteur de Wong Kar Wai" (though one student website reviewing the film confuses him with Tony Leung Kar-Fai, who starred in Les Amants).
The page also provides a transcript, with the questions in French (they are not heard in the audio portion of the interview).

Wow, I just found this incredible clip of Ang Lee (in english, spoken to a French interviewer), commenting (almost frame by frame) the beginning of the first sex scene, what the characters are thinking, feeling, the setting, Wong's act and why it's so artificial to Mr. Yee, why Yee is pissed (what Tony contributed in particular to the scene), etc. This is truly illuminating, and spells out what can only be intuited by the audience, about the director's intent, moment by moment.
