PostPosted: Sat Jul 02, 2005 7:44 am    Post subject: Hong Kong movies survey

This is about an article i read in a magazine ,its ' I weekly ' 30th june issue. There was an article about hong kong movies and it showed a survey that they did on 50 people... A pity i don't have a scanner and my computer can't type out chinese , but I'm going to type out in english based on my own translation....

When was the last time you went to a cinema to watch a Hong Kong film?

13% ~ a few days ago
20% ~ 1 month ago
13% ~ 3 months ago
22% ~ 6 months ago
11% ~ 1 year ago
17% ~ over 1 year ago

The reasons why you don't go to watch Hong Kong films...

37% ~ tickets are too expensive
22% ~ script is lousy
20% ~ synopsis repeating over and over
15% ~ no standard
13% ~ actors/actresses are always the same
11% ~ no confidence in hong kong films

Other than the above reasons, some think that VCDs appear on the market very fast, SCV also shows the movies very fast , so there isn't a need to watch it in the cinema. While others say that they have no time to watch movies, hong kong fims have lost its ability to attract viewers, there are very little hong kong film productions, and also the investments and the quality of hollywood movies are more high graded.

The reasons why you like to watch Hong Kong films...

57% ~ action packed scenes
17% ~ to see skillfull acting skills
15% ~ to support idols
13% ~ they're able to relate and connect to it
13% ~ support chinese movies
7% ~ because of gimickry

Other than the above attractions, others only watch if the storyline is good, other than that good publicity ways also attract viewers.

The best movies in the recent years...

15% ~ Infernal affairs [personally I like this movie alot =) and tony
is in it Very Happy ]
9% ~ New police story
7% ~ Kungfu Hustle [like this film too Razz ]

The reasons why you like to watch HollyWood films...

54% ~ wide range of materials used
35% ~ world famous actors and actresses acting in it
35% ~ high costs production therefore must be good
11% ~ gimmickry
7% ~ to follow up on trend, and to have a topic to chat with friends

Other than the above reasons, there are also some who want to support western idols, at the same time others say that the market is full of hollywood movies that there aren't much choices.

In year 2005, the movie you want to watch most is...

71% ~ Initial D
17% ~ A movie which is produced and acted by the original crew,
actors & actresses of Infernal Affairs
15% ~ Hei se hui [this is the han yu pin yin of the chinese title, sorry I do
not know the english title]
11% ~ Ru guo ai [another han yu pin yin, sorry again..]

Initial D has the winning percent, and the voters have suggested the following reasons :
interesting storyline, fresh , edited from a comic, exciting racing scenes,
ideal crew of actors, to support Jay Chou....

Favourite Hong Kong actor is...

22% ~ Tony Leung Chiu Wai [hm.. Razz feels so good to know that there
are so many viewers who still love watching Tony]
17% ~ Andy Lau
9% ~ Ekin Cheng
9% ~ Twins

The fact that the Hong Kong acting industry is not producing enough new actors is shown in the results...Most people still like actors who are from the 80s and 90s , some examples are tony leung cw, andy lau, ekin cheng and closely followed by chow yun fat, stephen chow, aaron kwok, jackie chan, jordan chan, daniel wu, the younger generation ones, edison chen, shawn yu, each get only about 2% of support. Very few mentioned female actresses, only twins got quite a number of votes, it shows that hong kong movies are made up mainly of male actors.

Favourite Hong Kong director is...

13% ~ Andrew Lau
13% ~ Xu ke
9% ~ Jonnie To

Probably because of the after effect of Infernal Affairs and Young And Dangerous, causing Andrew Lau to have many votes. What suprises is Xu Ke who hasn't directed much films lately still recieves quite a number of votes. Looks like the series of martial arts films Xu Ke made in the 90s still leaves a deep impression in others' minds.

Finished, at last . The comments after each poll are also translated from the magazine as well. Pardon me if the english tranlation isn't very good.
Well, thats all for now. Bye and good night to all tony fans...

Dear wan yu,

Thank you so much for your work to translate this long article!!!!

Hm, I am thinking totally different than the people they have asked. I am fed up with the Hollywood stuff. May be expensive, using lots of different materials... but where is the soul? I rather prefer watching HK movies. But that's my private opinion and everyone has the right to think different.

Am surprised that they don't trust into their own movie industrie that much.

Once I read an interview with WKW (South China Morning Post, mid May 2005) and he said that the HK audience is not hungry anymore concerning HK movies. - Pity, I put the newspaper away last week. Sad

Well, this American prefers Tony, too!! Wink

Even though Hollywood films have the money to produce great special effects, etc., etc., I'm so bored with the accepted "formula" for films in this country. That's why I prefer Independent and foreign films and documentaries... Hong Kong films are at the top of my list! I wish I had access to more of them!

And to add on to that, the style, totally different from the numerous hollywood production, the themes are always amazing, and the variety wide. They are home touch-base, you can easily identify with the situations therein.

An interesting read - thanks for the translation wan yu Smile

I prefer more off-beat fare as well - Hollywood films are indeed becoming even more formulaic.
