March 9, 2021

Where the Wind Blows (TBC) by Philip Yung and Septet – The Story of Hong Kong by Sammo Hung, Ann Hui, Patrick Tam, Yuen Wo-ping, Johnnie To, Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark, will open the 45th Hong Kong International Film Festival which will go hybrid with both-in-theatre and online screenings from April 1st – 12th, 2021.

During the 12-day extravaganza, over 190 titles from 58 countries and regions, of which 10 are world, 11 international and 43 Asian premieres, will be presented in close-to 230 screenings in theatres, and nearly 60 films are available through online platform. This is definitely a festival you shouldn’t miss!

Where the Wind Blows (TBC) by Philip Yung – Hong Kong | 2021 – 143 minutes
Cast: Aaron Kwok, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Du Juan
Section: Opening Film | World Premiere

Philip Yung’s long-awaited follow-up to the critically acclaimed Port of Call (39th Closing Film) is an ambitious, genre-bending epic loosely based on the rise and fall of the notorious “Four Great Sergeants” in 1960s Hong Kong. The film centres on the friendship and rivalry between two resourceful police detectives who forge dangerous alliances with organised crime. This first onscreen pairing of superstars Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Chiu-wai also boasts a scene-stealing performance from Hong Kong cinema icon Michael Hui.

Screening Dates:
April 1st, 2021 (Thursday) | Hong Kong Cultural Centre | 5:30 pm
April 4th, 2021 (Sunday) | Hong Kong Cultural Centre | 2:30 pm

Septet: The Story of Hong Kong by Sammo Hung, Ann Hui, Patrick Tam, Yuen Wo-ping, Johnnie To, Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark – Hong Kong | 2020 – 111 minutes
Section: Opening Film

Johnnie To ropes in six fellow veteran Hong Kong filmmakers for this highly anticipated omnibus. Each one of the short films covers a different period in the city’s recent history, including Sammo Hung’s nostalgia-tinged piece about his martial arts training, the late Ringo Lam’s poignant tribute to his hometown, Ann Hui’s quietly moving ode to the educators, and To’s dark comedy about three friends’ bonanza. Shot entirely on 35mm film, this is a momentous cinematic event that no Hong Kong film fan will want to miss.

Screening Dates:
April 1st, 2021 (Thursday) | Hong Kong Cultural Centre | 9:00 pm
April 5th, 2021 (Monday) | Hong Kong Cultural Centre | 9:30 pm

About the festival:
Founded in 1976, the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) is Asia’s oldest international film festival and a pioneer in introducing Hong Kong, Chinese language and Asian cinema and filmmakers to the world.

Annually screening over 200 titles from more than 50 countries in approximately 10 major cultural venues across the territory, the Festival is one of Hong Kong’s largest cultural events. The festival features world and international premieres of Hong Kong and Asian films, and Asian premiers of international films. The festival has maintained its founding premise of bringing films to local audiences that they might not be aware of, and of introducing Hong Kong, Chinese language, and Asian films to the world.

The wait continues Crying or Very sad

Hong Kong film festival cancels opening film, citing technical reasons
By Screen staff30 March 2021

Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF, April 1-12) has cancelled screenings of Philip Yung’s Where The Wind Blows, one of its two opening films, citing technical reasons and a request from the film’s owner.

The big-budget crime thriller, starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Aaron Kwok, tells the true story of corrupt cops in Hong Kong in the 1960s when the territory was still under British rule.

The festival stated on social media: “Upon request from the film owner, the screenings of Where The Wind Blows, originally scheduled at 5.30 p.m. on 1 April and 2.30 p.m. on 4 April, are cancelled due to technical reasons.”

The term ‘technical reasons’ has often been used by the Chinese authorities when a film has censorship issues. It was the reason cited when Zhang Yimou’s One Second was pulled from the Berlin Film Festival in 2019. Zhang’s film underwent some edits and was finally released in mainland China in November 2020, however it didn’t receive an international festival screening.

Where The Wind Blows is a Hong Kong-China co-production with investors including Mei Ah Film Production, Dadi Century and Bona Film Group. It was announced as one of HKIFF’s two opening films with the caveat ‘TBC’.

HKIFF will proceed with the screenings of its other opening film, omnibus Septet: The Story Of Hong Kong, which has already screened at festivals including Busan and Rotterdam.

‘One-Tenth of a Millimeter Apart’ Trailer: Uncover the Lost Scenes of Wong Kar Wai in New Doc
The short film premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival as part of a new restoration of "Happy Together."

With a vast filmography of 11 features, there’s bound to be plenty of Wong Kar Wai material left on the cutting room floor. A new documentary short, “One-Tenth of a Millimeter Apart,” aims to explore deleted scenes that didn’t make it into movies like “Chungking Express,” “Fallen Angels,” “In the Mood for Love,” “2046,” “The Grandmaster,” and more. The short film from Wong Kar Wai’s Jet Tone Films production company recently premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival alongside a new restoration of his classic gay romance “Happy Together.” Watch the trailer for the documentary short below.

The short film also celebrates the 30th anniversary of Jet Tone Films and features never-before-seen materials, including deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and selected narration from Wong Kar Wai.

The Hong King filmmaker’s body of work has been re-examined thanks to a new “World of Wong Kar Wai” box set recently released from The Criterion Collection, featuring new restorations of his features. IndieWire recently interviewed the filmmaker about the new release, which features 4K digital restorations of “Chungking Express,” “Fallen Angels,” “Happy Together,” “In the Mood for Love,” and “2046,” approved by the filmmaker:

For Wong, however, revisiting his previous films was only worth doing because it was done in such an aggressive way. “When a film needs to be restored,” he emailed, “there are always things that can be fixed, otherwise why bother with the restoration in the first place.” True enough, but who’s to say what’s broken? To this, Wong replied that he was “concerned with the limits of how much we should fix in each film without hurting it. But limits, like beauty, is a relative term — it is set in the mind of the beholder.” In other words: Mileage may vary, but he’s driving the car.

There are no details yet on when “One-Tenth of a Millimeter Apart” will be released in the United States, though Block 2 Distribution is handling the release, along with the theatrical rollouts of new restorations of Wong’s work. IndieWire recently ranked all 11 of the director’s features, with “2046” coming out on top, followed by “In the Mood for Love” and “The Grandmaster.”

First Trailer for New Wong Kar Wai Documentary Explores the Deleted Scenes of His Filmography
Jordan Raup April 4, 2021
https://thefilmstage.com/first-trailer-for-new-wong-kar-wai-documentary-explores-the-deleted-scenes-of-his-filmography/

With the arrival of every cinephile’s must-have this year, The Criterion Collection’s long-awaited Wong Kar Wai box set, the legendary director has discussed the changes he’s made to his most beloved films. While he was in the editing room, another project emerged, which finds him digging up footage that was left on the cutting room floor. To celebrate their 30th anniversary, his production company Jet Tone Films created a surprise new 30-minute documentary titled One-Tenth of a Millimeter Apart.

Premiering on the night of their 30th anniversary, this past Friday, April 2, at the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the short screened after the new restoration of Happy Together. Tracing the beginnings of Jet Tone Films, which was founded in 1991 by Wong Kar Wai for the production of Ashes of Time (1994), the film features never-before-seen materials, including deleted scenes, behind-the-scene footage, and selected narration by Wong Kar Wai.

“We give our regards to all that is past and was possible,” Wong said. “At their closest, they would have been part of these films, but for one-tenth of a millimeter.” The films he’s referring to that are featured in the documentary include Ashes of Time, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, My Blueberry Nights, and The Grandmaster.

As we await release details for the documentary, watch the newly-unveiled trailer below, which inventively plays with time as it explores his evocative career.
