HONG KONG (AP) — To his long list of accolades, Hong Kong actor Tony Leung is adding one with French flavor.
France's consul general made the 52-year-old actor an "Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters" at a ceremony Monday attended by Leung's wife Carina Lau and his friends including director Wong Kar-wai.
Consul General Arnaud Barthelemy praised Leung for his achievements in acting and thanked him for bringing together the cultures of France and Hong Kong.
Leung said he wanted to share the honor because he didn't make his films alone. "I think this honor should be shared with all those who have worked with me in films for the last 30 years," Leung said.
Tony Leung Chiu-wai is considered one of Hong Kong's finest actors, especially in his collaborations with Wong such as "Ashes of Time," ''Chungking Express" and "In the Mood for Love." That role won him a best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Their last film, the kung fu epic "The Grandmaster," was a critical and commercial success.
France made Wong a "Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters" in 2013. |

The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) is an Order of France, established on 2 May 1957 by the Minister of Culture, and its supplementary status to the Ordre national du Mérite was confirmed by President Charles de Gaulle in 1963. Its purpose is the recognition of significant contributions to the arts, literature, or the propagation of these fields.
French Government guidelines stipulate that citizens of France must be at least thirty years old, respect French civil law, and must have, "significantly contributed to the enrichment of the French cultural inheritance" to be considered for award.
Membership is not, however, limited to French nationals; recipients include numerous foreign luminaries.
Foreign recipients are admitted into the Order, "without condition of age".
The Order has three grades:
Commandeur (Commander) — medallion worn on necklet; up to twenty recipients a year.
Officier (Officer) — medallion worn on ribbon with rosette on left breast; up to sixty recipients a year.
Chevalier (Knight) — medallion worn on ribbon on left breast; up to 200 recipients a year.
The médaille of the Order is an eight-point, green-enameled asterisk, in gilt for Commanders and Officers and in silver for Knights; the obverse central disc has the letters "A" and "L" on a white enamelled background, surrounded by a golden ring emblazoned with the phrase "République Française". The reverse central disc features the head of Marianne on a golden background, surrounded by a golden ring bearing the words "Ordre des Arts et des Lettres". The Commander's badge is topped by a gilt twisted ring.
The ribbon of the Order is green with four white stripes and 37 mm wide.
On the first photo, you can see the round 'rosette' on the blue cushion next to the medal. It's a discreet pin which is commonly worn on the left lapel when wearing the medal is deemed too formal (that's almost always the case).
The medal box bears the name of the Paris jeweler Arthus-Bertrand.
The patent was signed on May 2014 by the former French Ministry of Culture Aurelie Filipetti just when Tony contributed to the 2014 French May Arts festival. Actually the decoration can be presented quite some time after the ministerial order is signed.
Sorry to be so lengthy but I'm French ^^
