The Japan fan Gathering 20130601/The First Table Report

This day morning, it was the last day of the Japanese Promotion of the movie"The Grand Master". Tony and some stuff were going to come back
Hong Kong to afternoon of the day.
This Fan Gathering place was a beautiful conference room(like a little Banquet Hall) of the first-rate hotel. It was enough to admits 35
fans +1. Some drink and snacks were prepared.
The fans who gathered had an Oriental and the Westerner other than The Japanese ladies.

Tony wore a white short-sleeved polo shirt & blue jeans, very relax style. When he entered, we raised a shout of joy, but he checked a table to sit down on first extremely and took seat. Very naturally.
Tony was accompanied by one bodyguard from Hong Kong. This bodyguard stood to the door of the doorway and was cautious in silence all the time.

(Translated by Eri)
[F is Fans, T is Tony, * is notes]

Tony looked a little tired and sleepy at first.

F: Are you tired ?
T: Yes, a bit tired.
F: What time did you wake up this morning ?
T: 7 o'clock.
(Tony looked around the table)
T: Actually, I wanted to invite you all for lunch, but there were none of the big rooms available for lunch today.
F: We don't need lunch. We are simply happy to see you.
T: How was the movie ?
F: There are some difference between HK version and Japanese version.
T: I think Berlin version and Japanese version are the same.
F: Which do you think is better ?
T: I don't mind. I don't really care.
F: How many times did you watch GM yourself ?
T: Once at the HK premiere, once at a cinema, once at Berlin, and I
watched DVD once at home, but I think you really should watch on the big screen.
F: What did you think about the Japan Premiere ?
T: I think that was good. Very warm.
F: But you had to have photo sessions a lot of times with different guests.
T: I didn't mind. At the moment this kind of promotion is the best way. No press conference.

( When a fan showed Tony Japanese GM leaflet, he looked thru all the
pages carefully.)

F: What kind of Japanese dishes were you looking forward to eating ?
What do you like the most ?
T: Sushi. I had Sushi on the first day in the evening. Then Fugu(Blowfish) Sashimi and hot pot, then Unagi (grilled eel). I had Tempura last night. I like all of them.
F: Did you drink ?
T: Of course, I drunk Sake (Japanese Rice wine) on 2 nights.
Especially after the premiere I drunk with WKW. I don't remember how much Sake I drunk that night. So yesterday I only had soft drinks.
F: Do you like spicy food ?
T: Yes, I like spicy food very much. Specially South East Asian food, like Thai curry.
F: But generally, people in HK don't eat much spicy food, right ?
T: There are some people like spicy food. We occasionally eat spicy food. Once in a while, like 5 times a year. We don't eat spicy food everyday. Cantonese cooking is not spicy.

F: Did you do any TV programs this time ?
T: I did. But I don't remember details. Some interviews.
F: You didn't do anything like "SMAP x SMAP"(A well known Japanese television variety show) like last time ?
T: No.

F: You are not working on any other movie now, so are you having a break ?
T: No, I still have to work. I have to take CM in Shanghai soon and I also have to continue the promotion. After Shanghai, I am going to Seoul to attend a Chinese Film Festival. The Grandmaster is the opening film, so I will go there just for the day.
F: Isn't it held in Busan ?
T: No, this is in Seoul. There was a Korean Film Festival in China last year, so this time Chinese Film Festival in Korea.

F: Your Kung Fu scenes were excellent. You had to have training for this movie, are you still continuing the training now ?
T: Now I only do a little when I have time. But without the trainer, I don't remember all the details.

F: Did you have any free time ? Did you do any shopping ?
T: I had some free time yesterday, but I am not interested in shopping. I just walked around Aoyama (in Tokyo). I just like hanging around. Because, when I am in HK, I have to wear a cap and mask to avoid paparazzi. I enjoy walking around freely in Japan.
F: It was a sunny day yesterday, didn't you go to the near by park ?
T: No, there were too many people yesterday.
F: Is it getting very hot in HK now ?
T: Actually, it is not so hot. Continued raining for about 2 months.Very strange climate.
F: Oh, so you are lucky to have a nice weather here.

F: Do you know the schedule for the promotion in the US ?
T: I am not sure, but probably in September.
F: I've heard that the release date was in August. Is it going to be changed ?
T: Not certain yet. It may change.
F: I think a lot of fans are waiting for you in North America.

When Tony was walking from the Second table to third table, We noticed
Tony was wearing his favorite pair of shoes (Grey swede shoes), so one
of the fans asked him "Do you like these pair of shoes ?" Tony
answered "I've been wearing these for more than 10 years."

F. Are you on TV?
T. Yes just for one channel, I don’t remember the name of channel or the program title.
F. No problem! Japanese fans record all the program you appear.
T. (Smile shyly)
F. How was the dinner party? Nice?
T. So so.
F Have you seen the Japanese version of "Grand Master"?
T. No, I haven’t. I think it is same as the one shown in Berlin Film Festival. (*Actually, it is different)

T. (He understood what she’s trying to say) You speak well.
T. You all are great! You speak Cantonese and English. I am sorry I don’t speak Japanese.
F. No, no. we like you so much. That is why we want to learn your language.

Tony noticed a photo book of Grandmaster which one of the fans kept on
the table. He asked her “Where did you get it in Taiwan?” She replied “In Hong Kong”. A staff from Jet Tone explained him about that book.
It is released in Taiwan and sold in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Tony nodded.

Then, the autograph and photo session started.

One of the fans asked Tony to sign on the photo and essay book “Buenos Aires” by Christopher Doyle.
T.” I have never seen this. I don’t know when it is released.Looks very old, Yes! Argentine. I miss there!

F. I love your hand. I like your hand, motion and everything. It is very sexy.
T. Thank you (Put out his right hand).

That was the birthday of one of the fans on the table.
He was told that in the beginning of the meeting.
When he write his autograph for her, he wrote spontaneously “Happy Birthday”!!

The Japan fan Gathering 20130601/The Third table Report

[F is Fans, T is Tony, * is notes]
(Tranlated by KiKi)

F. Did you go out for jogging during your stay?
T. No I didn't because I didn't want them (the Jettone crew) to worry.
They are worried if I get surrounded by fans outside if I go out. But
I did some exercise in the hotel.

F. Did you practice Kung fu?
T. No it wasn't Kung fu. I did jogging and exercise in the gym,

F. So you didn't go out at all?
T. I went out for walking in Aoyama.
F. Did anyone recognize you?
T. No. (Everyone is happy to hear that)

F. What did you eat in Japan?
T. I ate sushi on the first night. Then, eel on the rice…
F. Ah, unadon!
T. Unadon…. Then, Fugu. I ate tempura last night.

F. Did you drink sake?
T. Yes, a lot.
F. Do you have hangover today?
T. No, I didn't drink last night.
I drunk on the first night. I went out for eating sushi with Wong
Kar-wai. We got drunk.
Sushi goes with sake.

F. We heard you will attend Pusan film festival.
T. No, it is Chinese film festival in Korea. The Grandmaster was
selected for opening. So, I will go there.
F. With anybody else?
T. Wong Kar-wai will go, I think. I don't know others.

F. Your birthday is coming soon. Are you planning to have a birthday
party this year?
T. No. I don't have any plan.

F. My birthday is also in June. Actually one day earlier than yours.
When I celebrate my birthday, I also celebrate yours, wishing your
health and good luck (Tony smiles….)

F. I am her cousin. I was born in June as well. Because our birthday
is same month and we look like each other, people think we are twins!
T. (Looked bit surprised and smiled silently)

F. We know you practice so hard for this film. Chang Chen and Zhang
Ziyi were also worked hard.
Imagine, if three of you fight each other, who will be the winner you think?
T. I don't know..
F. Zhang Ziyi?
T. Who?
F. She (pointing out in the"Grand Master" leaflet)
T. I don't know…(Tony flipped over the leaflet with smile on his face
He might have imagined the fight? )
F. Why don't you say “Yes, I will be champ!”
T. No, no. (Slightly giggled)

F. What are you doing for keeping your appearance and energy
maintenance? What makes you look so young?
T. I like sports and I do a lot. I think it works.

F. I am dancing! I have practiced Hawaiian Hula for ten years.
T. Dance is also good.
F. You don't dance?
T. I don't (probably he isn't keen on that)

F. It is my first time to see you! I got very nervous and emotional. I
am almost crying….
T. (Looked into her face.)

F. Is it OK to take a photo with you?
T. Yes.

F. (Showing the card) Last time I saw you, I told you about my weblog.
I draw illustration. Most of my work is you! My URL is in the card.
Please visit.
T. OK.

The Japan fan Gathering 20130601/The Fourth table Report

[F is Fans, T is Tony, * is notes]
(Tranlated by KiKi)

F. Unlike other Hong Kong actors, you don’t play a cameo role. Why?
T. "Cameo role"?
F. In Hollywood or Hong Kong, a famous actor plays a very small part in a film or appears for few seconds. It is a way of topical gimmicks to attract audience.

T. I don’t do that. I don’t like it. Besides, it is not easy because of the producer or film company.

F. I heard you are planning to take one year holiday.
What are you going to do?

T. Nothing much. I don’t want to do anything. Specially, film-making doesn’t interest me now. I have done too much.

F. Yes, you have done three films, "The Grandmaster", "The Great Magician" and "The Silent War".
T. Three films in this four years….
But I will practice Kung fu. It is fun if I don’t do it for film.

F. Are you planning to go other countries?
T. No I don’t.

F. Your fans are calling you from all over the world! US fans want you to go to US, Thailand fans want you to go to Bangkok.

T. I am going to US for the promotion (of "The Grand Master"). The day before yesterday, I was told it is the end of September, But I don’t know.

F. You still practice Kung fu.
T. I am not doing now because I am too busy for promotion. But I want to continue.

F. Is it "Wing Chun"?
T. Yes.

T. I am your fan since I saw the Infernal Affairs. Before that, I had never seen Asian film. Now, I am very into it.
You opened the door to the new world for me!.

T. (Nodded and smiled)
F. I quite like your comedy. I have read your interview saying you quite like acting comedy. What kind of comedy you like to play?
T. (Pondering for a while) I like love comedy.
F. Are you planning to play in comedy film?
T. No, not now.

F. I'm quite happy to hear you are still practicing Kung fu.
How does it affect you physically and mentally?
T. Kung fu is a type of sports but it is more than sports. It is very hard but it works for mental cultivation.
F. I was very impressed by the motion of martial arts in the film. It made me feel like wow! I want to try this. As you said, I expect it helps me to be stronger mentally.
T. Mental aspect is an important factor for Chinese martial arts. Yes, it is helpful.

F. The trainer who broken your arm is your master(Duncan Leung)'s son (Kermit Leung). I wonder why you didn’t fire him? Wong Kar-wai even put him in the film!
T. That was an accident in shooting. Me and Wong Kar-wai have never thought about firing him.
F. He is living in US. Is he trying to be an actor?
T. That is what I have heard. He is interested in acting.

F. I found the Cinematographer named "Dylan Doyle" in the Shooting staff of that"The Grand Master". Is he a relative of Christopher Doyle?
T. Shooting staff?
F. Yes, One of second unit cinematographer. He is a Westerner.
T. Oh...I don't know where he is from. I think that he isn't a relative of Christopher Doyle.
F. Thanks.

F. I have seen "The Grandmaster" in Hong Kong and Canton 18times. I bought HongKong version DVD. And I saw the film in Japan Premier the
day before yesterday. I noticed the musical arrangement and editing is quite different and I got confused! Why Dir.Wong Kar-wai has changed that much?
T. Really? So different? I don’t know. You should grab him and ask. Unfortunately, he has already left….
F. Yes, I should! Your part is featured in the last scene of Japanese edition. That is sooooo cool!!!!… I want to suggest Dir.Wong to use that scene in other editions and show it to your fans in Hong Kong!
T. (Giggling)

PostPosted: Sat Jun 08, 2013 3:46 pm    Post subject: Another report from Paul Reply with quote

Hi everyone.
Here is another report.

In the 4th table, Paul was sitting beside Tony.
After all fans had conversation with Tony, he started chatting with Paul.
They talked about Kung-fu passionately, so we left them alone and let them talk.
After the meeting, I asked Paul to disclose “boy’s talk”.
Here is the report written by him.
------------------

I was asking him about the Wing Chun style if it was traditional because his martial arts stance seemed in the pictures a little different, like side stance instead facing forward. But Tony said it's very traditional style because they researched lots of Wing Chun masters. His teacher lived in America and taught wing chun to the navy. I said "the navy learned Wing Chun?!" and tony said "Yeah!"

Tony said he was tired from making movies and said he wants to practice Wing Chun while taking a break so my second question was if he would train with other masters or by himself. He said he would train at home but some of his Sifu's students would train with him.
Tony: you need other people to do it with because of the...
Paul: Chi sao
Tony: Yes, you know?
Paul: Yes, I studied it in Hong Kong

Tony asked if there was anywhere I could practice Wing Chun in Japan I said not really, it's not practiced here so I really miss it.
I asked Tony about his Sifu and he said that actually it was his Sifu's Son that broke his arm.

Tony: So do you like Bruce Lee?
Paul: Yes, he's my hero.
Tony: I had to do research for the movie and there's an interesting book he wrote on Kung Fu.
Paul: Yes, I read that a few years ago.
Tony: It was very interesting to read.
Paul: When I first read that I didn't really understand it but after I starting learning Wing chun it made a lot more sense.
Tony: He was a great martial artist.
Paul: And a great philosopher.
Tony: Yeah.

I asked Tony if he would like to open his own wing chun school.
He looked surprised "be a teacher?"
Paul: When you retire you could teach it to people.
He doesn't answer immediately but says no and that he will just do it as a hobby (but in my personal opinion he would be a great Teacher)

Tony: So a lot of what he (Bruce Lee) wrote in that book involves Taoism in the explanation of things. For westerners I think it's difficult to understand.
Paul: I think I could understand it. The movement of water as a way to express movement.

Picture time.

Tony turned to me again "so you have to come back to Hong Kong for Wing Chun."
"Definitely" I said.

As Tony left I shook hands with him. My first time to shake hands with him. It was a real honor.

--------------------

Tony looked so amused while he was chatting with Paul.
They couldn’t stop talking. Tony was trying to talk to him even when the photo sessions started. We had to ask Tony to turn his face to the camera.

As Paul wrote in the report, when Tony left the room he talked to Paul personally “See you, Paul” and shook hands.
We looked at it and felt envious, later I told him so.
He replied innocently, “Boys stick together!”

Thank you, Paul and Kiki.

Paul, I don't remember the name of the school ,
I saw a TV program related to GM promotion introducing a class in Kawasaki
( or somewhere in Kanagawa Prefecture), master is Danish.
It is also said in the program wing chun is quite popular in Europe.
Sorry this doesn't help you a lot.... Sad

Yuka, I also watched the same program.

Here is the school, if anyone interested in. Not so far from Shibuya.

http://js.dee.cc/english.html

Although "modern European wing chun" might be different from the original one, it also said "Wing chun of the Yip Man lineage".
