Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Simon Yam reunite after 30 years in top-secret movie

After more than 30 years, iconic Hong Kong actors Tony Leung Chiu Wai, 58, and Simon Yam, 65, are reuniting on the big screen.

In a top-secret movie about a sensational case which rocked Hong Kong in the 1970s, the two titans will face off against each other for the first time since their brief screen encounter in Bullet In The Head (1990).

Fans of TVB dramas will fondly remember their hit drama serial Police Cadet '85, in which Leung's hero cop battled Yam's thoroughly detestable and corrupt villain.

The upcoming blockbuster, backed by Emperor Motion Pictures to the tune of HK$200 million (S$34 million), also marks Leung's return to the Hong Kong movie scene after an absence of three years.

The award-winning actor of movies such as Lust, Caution (2007) and Infernal Affairs (2002) recently wrapped filming on upcoming Hollywood superhero movie Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings.

News of the Leung-Yam vehicle has brought hope to the Hong Kong film industry, which has been battered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In May last year, movie mogul Albert Yeung of Emperor Motion Pictures and actor Louis Koo, who heads the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild and has his own film company, announced that they will work together to produce 10 Hong Kong movies in the next two years.

Yam, who won Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2010, was among the first to pledge his support, saying: "I will help to act, produce or direct if I am approached. I am even keen to take up jobs behind the scenes."

Tony Leung to star in new EMP movie with Simon Yam
https://sg.style.yahoo.com/tony-leung-star-emp-movie-060900420.html

19 Feb – After months in Australia filming Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings", it was reported that Tony Leung Chiu Wai has returned to Hong Kong to begin filming a new movie with Emperor Motion Pictures (EMP) alongside Simon Yam.

As reported on On CC, sources claimed that the upcoming film will be EMP's "secret weapon" to combat the ice age currently plaguing the Hong Kong film industry, and that the company is investing more than HKD 200 million for the project that will boast a star-studded cast.

Although not much information has been released about the project, it is said that the movie will be an adaptation of a real-life criminal event that happened in the 1970s.

The project will mark Tony and Simon's first project together after many years, after they previously collaborated in TVB's 1985 series, "Police Cadet '85" and 1990 movie, "Bullet in the Head".

On the other hand, other sources are also claiming that Andy Lau will be joining the movie as well, aside from singer-actress Charlene Choi - the latter who will be working with Tony for the first time ever.

Tony Leung and Andy Lau to Team Up in New Action Film ‘Goldfinger’
By Rebecca Davis Feb 19, 2021 2:12pm PT

Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Andy Lau will team up in a new major action movie titled “Goldfinger,” local reports said Friday.

The two beloved Hong Kong-born A-listers haven’t worked together since the end of the “Infernal Affairs” trilogy 18 years ago.

The reunion will be written and directed by Felix Chong, the screenwriter for that series. It is backed by Emperor Motion Pictures and mainland Chinese partners, with a reported budget of around $30.8 million (RMB200 million).

Chong found success in mainland China in 2018 with his counterfeiting thriller “Project Gutenberg,” which he wrote and directed. Starring Chow Yun-Fat, Aaron Kwok and Zhang Jingchu, it grossed $183 million in China and $4.3 million in Hong Kong, going on to win best film, best script, best director and four other prizes from 17 nominations at the 2019 Hong Kong Film Awards.

Other members of the “Goldfinger” cast will include fellow veteran Hong Kongers Simon Yam (most recently seen in “Septet: The Story of Hong Kong” and mainland China’s jingoistic blockbuster “My People, My Country”) and Philip Keung (“Shock Wave 2”), as well as Alex Fong Chung-sun (“Overheard 3”), Cantopop starlet Charlene Choi, Chin Ka-lok and Carlos Chan, according to reports.

Set in the 1980s, the film depicts cut-throat machinations between Hong Kong’s jostling business elites amidst the backdrop of the tail end of British colonial rule. It tells the story of the rise and bust of a fictional Hong Kong company called Jiali Group, following the travails of its chairman Cheng Yiyan through 15 years of investigations by the Independent Commission Against Corruption as murders are committed, billions in market value evaporate and millions are spent on litigation fees.

The film is reportedly inspired by the fate of the Carrian Group, a Hong Kong conglomerate that grew rapidly in the 1980s before collapsing in scandal shortly thereafter.

Tensions between Hong Kong and the mainland have soared since Beijing passed its controversial National Security Law that strictly reduces speech and ups censorship in the territory. The topic of anti-corruption investigations aren’t frowned upon and are even encouraged by the Chinese regime, however, and thus likely safe ground for storytelling, as long as the good guys prevail and the baddies are punished.

The first “Infernal Affairs” film (2002) and its 2003 sequel grossed $7 million and $3.2 million, respectively, in Hong Kong, but did not screen widely in China. “Infernal Affairs 3” grossed $3.9 million in Hong Kong and just $5.6 million in China in 2003. At that time, the China market was home to far fewer screens.

The last film starring Leung to screen in mainland China was the thriller “Europe Raiders,” which grossed $22.4 million in 2018. His films have earned collectively earned a total of $664 million in the country.

Lau is currently listed as the fourth most-popular actor in the country of any gender on the industry data tracker Maoyan’s real-time popularity list, and is the 25th highest ranking male actor in terms of box office generated in the market, thanks to films that have earned $1.4 billion over the course of his career. His latest, “Shock Wave 2,” grossed $196 million.

“Once Upon a Time in Hong Kong” Completes Filming
By Huynh on May 31, 2021 in Hong Kong Movie, NEWS
https://www.jaynestars.com/news/once-upon-a-time-in-hong-kong-completes-filming/

Reuniting Andy Lau (劉德華) and Tony Leung (梁朝偉) on screen in 18 years since the Infernal Affairs <無間道> franchise, Once Upon a Time in Hong Kong (金手指) wrapped up filming last week.

Set in the 1980s, the movie is based on real-life events of corporate corruption and fraud in Hong Kong’s financial industry. It follows how a hot newly listed Hong Kong company went into bankrupt just a few years later, with the high-profile case attracting the scrutiny of the international corruption commission.

“We have waited more than a decade to see the two Film Kings to collaborate again. This is definitely a rare opportunity!” Emperor Motion Pictures’ Albert Yeung (楊受成) said. With the film costing 350 million yuan to produce, Mr. Yeung has been heavily involved and often visited the set to oversee the filming progress. He would often treat the cast and crew to lunch and dinner to thank them for their hard work.

When producer Ronald Wong (黃斌) showed him around the film set, including Tony’s lavish office which was decorated with antiques, Mr. Yeung praised, “The setting for these scenes are furnished like mansions. Real mansions may not even look this grand. Even though it cost a lot of money, providing all this to be used by such talented and award-winning actors and cast is definitely worth it. I am sure the audience feels the same way I do, and are looking forward to this movie.”

Currently in post production, Once Upon a Time in Hong Kong is slated for a 2022 release, and also stars Charlene Choi (蔡卓妍), Simon Yam (任達華), Alex Fong (方中信), Philip Keung (姜皓文), and Chin Ka Lok (錢嘉樂).
