Just so people are aware...this is turning into a really big issue.
I think our idol deserves more support. Crying or Very sad

Sino-Japan Relations Worsen - Tony Leung Suffers Backlash
Source: Mingpao

After announcing his role in the new movie 1905 by Japanese director Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Tony Leung has been receiving backlash from netizens for taking part in the project. The movie will start filming in Japan in November and is expected to complete filming by January. The film is scheduled for release in the fall of next year. However, with the ongoing tension between Japan and China over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, many people have expressed their disappointment in Tony over his participation in the movie.

Many netizens have laid the blame on Tony: "First he doesn't lack money. Secondly he doesn't lack good scripts. What he lacks is a backbone and his patriotic pride. It's really disappointing." Another netizen left a message, "Announcing this project at such a sensitive time? Do you know what you're doing?" Others have urged Tony to follow Li Bing Bing's example [by declining to promote her film in Japan].

While Tony hasn't posted any new messages on Weibo, there has been thousands of comments discussing the issue. Many netizens have voiced their support for him, saying that the film has been in talks for a while and it just so happens the production is starting at this time. They don't think people should place the blame on Tony.

Meanwhile, Mainland singer Sun Nan was suppose to attend a concert for the '40th Anniversary of the Normalization of Diplomatic Relations Between Japan and China'. However, yesterday it was announced that he has cancelled his plans to visit Japan. Sun Nan is the latest celebrity to withdraw his activities in Japan following Li Bing Bing. Their actions seem to show their dissatisfaction with how Japan has been handling the dispute.

As for the concert happening this month on the 25th at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, it has been postponed indefinitely. The concert was originally meant to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Sino-Japan diplomatic relations and Japanese singer Tanimura Shinji was scheduled to perform at the event. According to his management company, they have already been in contact with the event organizers. There is currently no date in mind to reschedule the concert.

Not promoting a movie that one is done with production-wise isn't the same thing as not doing a movie that one is contracted to do. The critics' "example" is not a fair example. The stakes are very different.

I'm confident that our Idol will be able to overcome this thumbright

If the relation between 2 countries' getting bad, ordinary people have to work together to improve the situation. That is the way to avoid the extreme conflict and violence.

If Tony is working with Mr. Kurosawa who happen to be a Japanese, why he has to be blamed ? Mad

I really hope Tony's good intention is not going to be distorted by the politics. Sad

I am so mad I can hardly see straight! There's nothing I have deeper contempt for than the mindless mob mentality that goes under the label of "patriotism," (and here we have the press fanning the flames, as usual. If they have no news worth printing, they try to help create news).

Someone said Tony didn't lack for good scripts??? Maybe I'm just a complete cinema snob, but to me, this is easily the most interesting collaboration of Tony's since the one with Ang Lee. The people who should be bringing Tony great projects don't seem to be, but that may simply be how things appear to someone outside the whole process.

Yes, the best thing Tony, and Mr. Kurosawa can do, is show that individual people can be bigger than the political dealings that are happening right now. We're ALL human beings, and we have only one planet on which to dwell, so we'd better learn to get along. They can set the example in this case.

Whatever you decide to do, Tony, I defer to your feelings and wisdom. This is one time I don't envy you your job. I hope things are not as bad as this article seems to indicate. Take good care of yourself, and know you have a lot of people in your corner. God bless you!

I have been absent for a few weeks. That's the reason why I got the news quite late. Sad

I've just finished reading and after that I don't know why I miss Tony so much...Embarassed

I myself don't support anything or anyone that's going to hurt Tony. They intrinsically don't understand Tony at all.

Obviously, he does no harm to anybody. So far what Tony has done is only to bring happiness to his audiences, to us...His movies have brought beautiful moments for many people all over the world. Moreover, Tony is one of the top-ranking actors who bring resounding fame to not only Chinese but also Asian movie industry. Smile

Actually, we owe him love and justice.

Tony once said that he only wants to stay in Hong Kong but nowhere else. If they really know him, they will certainly feel how Tony loves his motherland. Love which isn't necessary to say out directly is just the true and deep love indeed. Love for motherland has stayed naturally in every of us since we were born. Very Happy

Whatever happens, it's absolutely not due to Tony. Wink

Don't shift the blame on things which he has never done, even never happened in his mind. Sad

I support Tony's decision to the last, whatever it is sunny . All I care are just Tony's health, Tony's safe, Tony's happiness. That's all.

As long as Tony is happy and peaceful with his choice, I'm happy too In Love

We wish you all the best, Tony Giving a kiss. We are always with u Very Happy.

In my opinion, making a movie is only about arts and entertainment; it has nothing to do with politics! Arts have no boundaries among countries!!

This pending movie, which has been planning for years, is going to be filmed in Japan and Taiwan, with a Japanese director, a Chinese actor and bunch of other Japanese actors speaking 90% of their dialogue in Chinese, this all seems to me a good cultural interaction and exchange. It will only bring peace to the world.

People who have backbones are those who adhere to their promises (in this case a movie contract). On the other hand, spineless ones are more like those who blindly drift with the wind. Conflicts over few small islands have been going on and off for decades. During these many years, ordinary people in both countries have been benefited from exchange of arts, culture and products etc. Why netizens cannot have a clear mind and let politicians to solve their problems in a rational way?

Anyway, Tony, whatever you decide to do, you have my 100% support. I sincerely hope you don’t get too much disturbance from mindless people. Be happy (if possible)!

Carina Lau: Tony Leung to Put Film On Hold
Source: Mingpao

With the ongoing disputes between Japan and China over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, the relationship between the two countries have gotten increasingly intense. With anti-Japanese sentiments escalating in recent days, Tony Leung has taken a beating after announcing his participation in the Japanese film 1905. Netizens have condemned him for not having a backbone. Yesterday night, Tony's wife Carina Lau attended a banquet held by the Emperor Group. She expressed that Tony will be putting the film on hold indefinitely. Tony's management company Jet Tone also expressed that he has yet to sign the contract for the film.

Yesterday's banquet was held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Emperor Group. The star-studded affair attracted not only celebrities, but many elite businessmen and distinguished politicians. Casino tycoon Stanley Ho attended the event accompanied by his fourth wife Angela Leong and son Arnaldo. While he hasn't been seen in public lately, he appeared to be in good spirits. Henderson Land Development Chairman Lee Shau-kee attended the banquet along with his son Martin Lee and his daughter-in-law Cathy Tsui. Cheung Kong Holdings Chairman Li Ka Shing, Henry Tang Ying-yen, Tsang Hin-chi, Paula Tsui, Hong Xian Nu, Donnie Yen, Jennifer Tse, Andy On, Deborah Lee, EEG big-sister Joey Yung, Nicholas Tse, Twins, Alien Sun, Fan Bing Bing, Christy Chung, Connie Chan, Andy Lau and Ge You also attended the event. Out of all the attendees, Carina and Cathy Tsui were the most eye catching. Carina had a low plunging dress, while Cathy revealed her bare back.

When asked whether she's aware of the backlash Tony has received from netizens, Carina responds, "Of course! But it seems like the film was in the works since 2009. The film has been pushed back until now because he hasn't had time in his schedule." With the escalating tension between Japan and China, will he consider stepping down from the project? "I think it will be postponed indefinitely."

Carina believes that reasonable people would not place the blame on the director or the actors. As for netizens calling Tony a 'Han Traitor' and requesting he apologizes? Carina angrily says, "Is that really necessary? I hope people will view the issue more rationally." Tony's management company Jet Tone has issued a statement saying the discussions for the film began back in 2009. However, Tony has not seen the script yet and has not officially signed onto the project.
