Ang Lee gives Ipoh a feel of Hollywood

IPOH: Shooting for award-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee’s latest film Lust, Caution here started off without much fuss.

Lee, who recently won an Oscar for best director for Brokeback Mountain, arrived at Jalan Bandar Timah for a last-minute inspection at 11.45am yesterday.

He later joined the cast and crew in a customary prayer ceremony, where they sought blessings for smooth filming, before the cameras started rolling at around 1pm.

Locals who showed up hoping to catch a glimpse of the celebrities involved in the film were disappointed.

To avoid prying eyes, the crew had put up curtains around the set and had also parked lorries, vans and a tour bus at strategic spots.

Among those there was photography student Su Zhong Yuan, 22, who is a serious Ang Lee fan.

The student from Kuantan, Pahang, had thought nothing of travelling eight hours on a bus to get to the film set.

“I reached Ipoh on Tuesday evening and have been waiting since 7am to get the director to sign an autograph. I’ve admired Ang Lee since he directed Eat Drink Man Woman,” he said.

Although security at the film set was very tight, Su said he planned to hang around.

“I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to meet the director,” he added.

Lee is expected to shoot his spy thriller in parts of the city until Saturday before filming continues in Penang on Sunday.

Besides Jalan Bandar Timah, filming will also be done at Jalan Panglima, Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Jalan Chua Cheng Bok, Jalan Che Wan, Jalan Sultan Yusuf, Jalan Dato’ Maharajalela and Jalan Pasar here.

Based on a short story by Chinese writer Zhang Ailing, or Eileen Chang, Lust, Caution stars Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung, Chinese-American pop star Wang Lee-Hom and mainland newcomer Tang Wei.

It is set in Shanghai during the World War II era, with Leung playing an intelligence officer while Wang and Tang play students plotting to assassinate him.

On Tuesday, Lee, Wang, Tang and the production team were also spotted having dinner at Assam House in Greentown.

Restaurant owner Kenzon Loh said he had received a call from the director’s assistant who made reservations forthree tables.

“Among the dishes they ordered were taufu, vegetables, curry fish head, pandan chicken and mango kerabu,” he added.

Frenzy over Ang Lee

IPOH: There was a mini media frenzy in Jalan Bandar Timah, old town, as photographers jostled to take pictures and reporters tried to get Ang Lee to answer a few questions.

While the Oscar-winning Taiwanese director did not rebuff the reporters and photographers, he did not exactly welcome them.

But, with a cap to shield his face from the scorching 4pm sun, Lee did pose for the cameras and came forward to offer hand shakes.

Lee, who arrived on Monday night, is in the city to shoot scenes for his next movie Lust, Caution, which is a spy-romance thriller based on the famous Chinese author Zhang Ailing’s (Eileen Chang) novel set in Japanese-occupied Shanghai in the 1930s.

Asked why he chose Ipoh to shoot his new movie, Lee said it was because Ipoh has retained many of its pre-war buildings with their unique architecture.

"The old buildings here are still standing, many of them cannot be found in Hong Kong or Shanghai... and Ipoh is a nice place," he said.

Pointing to the balcony of a prewar building with bottle-shaped supporting posts for the balustrade, he said such unique architecture was only found here.

Production staff were tight-lipped about the film, but a crew member told the New Straits Times that filming would start at noon today, and wrap up on Friday.

They will then move on to Penang on Sunday, before the movie is completed in Shanghai.

Asked if stars like Cannes best actor Tony Leung and Chinese-American pop star Wang Lee-Hom, would be coming to Ipoh, the crew member said he was not sure, but added that mainland newcomer Tang Wei would probably arrive tomorrow.

The entire stretch of Jalan Bandar Timah, Jalan Panglima and Jalan Tun Sambanthan in the city’s old town will be closed from today until Friday from 7am to 7pm for the filming.

Lee is well known for his film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. His last film, Brokeback Mountain, won Best Film and the Best Director at the 2006 British film awards (Bafta), and he was the first Asian director to win a best director Oscar for the movie.

when i heard that the movie group will come to malaysia for shooting, i was so exited, and i went to all teh possible places at penang with the hope to get a glimpse at him...if can take a photo with him of course is better la! the with my friend waited outside a temple because there was closed due to filming, waited about...2 hours i think..then we couldn't wait too long because we were not so free, then we saw two people came out and asked them whether tony's inside, then they said he was not inside, inside there was another film's shooting! oh my god!! i could not see him...very dissapointed, then i was told that he won't be coming to malaysia, so sad...

Yeah, D-Love, Tony has no part in the shooting in Malaysia, not in Ipoh or Penang. As I cannot read Chinese, a friend said that the Chinese paper only reported that Wang Li Hom came but not Tony. I was monitoring the dates and planned to go back to Penang to try to catch him. Unfortunately, no chance of seeing him here. VERY SAD , DISAPPOINTED and CONFUSED .

When Tony is starting shooting and it seems that we lost track of tony's schedule. I wonder where he is now? Isn't he has wrapped up CoP?

I think he must in Hongkong with Carina as her dad passed away recently.

Yeah, ashley found out on Thurs 7/9 itself that Tony will not be filming in Malaysia. It was pre-agreed earlier that he will film in HK and Shanghai instead. So I guess the stories about him missing the flight or changing his filming plan due to the death of Carina's father aren't true.

Sorry dolphin, we didn't tell the news out earlier because we don't know how reliable our source is. We were constantly in doubt ourselves after we hear so many rumours. One report says he is coming, another says he is not. We don't want to mislead anyone...What if we tell everybody Tony is not coming but he came??? Then all Tony Malaysian fans will surely throw stones at us! Haha. Besides, ashley and I thought we were the only two Malaysians who are crazy enough to track down Tony from KL to Ipoh to Kampar and Penang...never know they are so many fans out there who are equally interested. Will keep you guys in mind next time
