Monke is correct that "Happy Together" isn't necessarily a gay flick, but I would bet it's a favorite with gays. The movie is the examination of a dysfunctional and unhealthy relationship that can easily be a heterosexual one. Props to WKW for having the creative vision to explore in-depth the relationship between a gay couple. The characters are treated with full emotional range and not as cardboard cutouts. And I give Tony a lot of credit for daring to take on a gay character without holding anything back. Although I didn't like the overall mood of "Happy Together," this film put Tony's acting talent on the map for me. I thought it was one of his finest performances, rivalling ITMFL.

You're right. Actually, there's one article in Sandy's site that examine some roles Tony has played--and that article said that Tony's performance in Happy was actually greater than in ITMFL, and I believe if Tony can choose, he'd choose to be awarded Best Actor for this movie instead of ITMFL. No wonder he was sooo upset when beaten by Sean Penn (and by just one vote, to add pain to the insult). That article also mentioned his most memorable scene in Happy, which was the tape recorder scene. If only I could watch that scene only without having to see the entire film! Pls don't misunderstand me: I have NOTHING against gay ppl, in fact I have nice lesbian friends in Australia when I took Chinese class. I just don't feel comfortable with what they are doing...I can't bear seeing man kissing and caressing his fellow man or woman making love with another woman. Because I think man and woman are made for each other (pls forgive me if I sound dogmatic), their organs have been designed for it, and being homosexuals I believe is something learned, whether the individuals want it or not. Perhaps that is why Will Smith didn't want to do gay roles (and Tony actually didn't want to do it either at first), maybe he does not feel comfortable because of his religious background though maybe he himself has nothing against the gay ppl.

Again, this is just my personal view about why I don't think I'll see Happy Together...hehe, the image of Tony making love with Leslie makes me shiver Razz . I apologize if I offend anybody...I just want to express my thoughts. Then again, I hope Tony will be able to repeat the level of performance he achieved in Happy Together in less extreme characters. That will make the entire world notice him!

There's a funny behind-the-scenes story by Tony about how WKW manipulated him in the role. WKW promised Tony that he would have to only kiss Leslie Cheung, who had revealed his real-life homosexuality. But during filming, WKW conned Tony into a simulated sex scene with Leslie. It can't be easy for a male heterosexual actor to engage in simulated sex scene with an admitted homosexual actor (though Leslie and Tony are great friends). So I admire Tony's security with himself to allow himself to be so vulnerable and display the incredible range of his acting skills.

That's what made me think Tony's something special from the very beginning. He's a true actor from birth.

And that takes me back to Mu99le's reservation in seeing Tony out of his element. I assure you that if you see Tony playing a gay character in "Gorgeous" you would love him even more (if that is possible!)

You can be sure that I'll love it!! Very Happy I've seen the movie but not entirely, and he's very funny and cute! Though he's a gay but his sexual orientation was not blatantly exposed--the film focused more on his antics which makes his character very fun. So in that sense it's a far cry from Happy, hehehe...

p.s: I don't say that Happy is not a good movie--with top notch performance like that, I don't have to see it to say that it's an award-winning flick. I just want to say that it's hardly an entertainment...for me! Razz

You don't have to apologize for your views. You have a right to feel as you do. As long as you can respect another person without judgment as to what they are as a person, I think your views can co-exist with supporting homosexuals.

I think that I am supportive of homosexuals in any of their efforts to gain equal rights to heterosexuals. I believe they should be allowed to marry and gain legal rights as marriage partners because there are distinct legal rights afforded to marriage partners over unmarried partners, unless they live in a common-law state which recognizes long-term co-habitation as a marriage in fact. I believe gays should be free to live as anybody else without harassment or discrimination as should all minorities. And I am completely comfortable around and with gays. I am a firm believer that homosexuals are genetically born that way because no one would choose to suffer the harassment that many homosexuals endure through their lives, especially their formative childhoods. But I think there are some people who like to experiment with either sex and still be heterosexual or bisexual.

But having said that, I'm sort of with you in that I don't care to see homosexuals/lesbians or 2 same-sexed, experimenting couples make out on screen (and what people do in their private lives is their business). It's not a turn on for me because I am heterosexual. But I don't think there is anything wrong with gay sex. It's just not for me.

Here in the States, there is a show on pay cable (Showtime) about gay men that pushes the limits in its portrayal of gays. I would say it's several degrees more graphic than "Happy Together," but I wouldn't call it pornographic either. Even if they didn't show any makeout scenes, I still wouldn't care for the show because it doesn't interest me. Some of the characters are funny but otherwise, I'm not particularly drawn to anyone on the show.

If they made an entertaining (to me) show with gay characters, I wouldn't mind any sex scenes and wouldn't prevent me from watching the show. Right now, all I can think of a show that is primarily with gay characters is NBC's "Will & Grace." Though it is a comedy show, I think too often the show is over-the-top and not that funny. But occasionally I might catch an episode or two if they have an interesting guest star...like Harry Connick, Jr.

Anyway, "Happy Together" is too depressing of a movie for me to enjoy watching. But I can't deny its artistic value.

After I graduated, I applied as Communication specialist only to get rejected several times, and finally I landed a job as English translator. Then through a small advertisement in newspaper, I tried to apply as part-time writer, and as time goes by I found that my interest is truly in language. After I quitted from my job as translator, I applied as technical writer in a software company and that's where I am now. I still have deep passion to become all-encompassing writer in the future, so I keep developing my skills through my part-time job as feature writer while also looking for more creative writing job.

After I read the Tony's fiction story I reread your bio. You stated that you was a translator prior landing a job as a technical writer? What kind of material and from what language you translated into English? Feature writer, huh? Wink Do you still working as a feature writer? How is that going girl? Smile

Hey Monke and Mu99le!

I've thoroughly enjoyed your messages back and forth! Even though I found "Happy Together" a bit disturbing... not because it concerns a gay relationship... but because it concerns a dysfuntional relationship. It makes me feel very uncomfortable to view other people's emotional pain. (Even though it was fictional.) But you have to admit, it was an excellent work by the actors AND the director!

I also felt the same way when I saw "In the Mood for Love." I think I went through a half of a box of tissues because I was so frustrated to see these two people not expressing their love for each other! And the ending just about killed me!

And I've said it before, and I'll say it again, when I first saw "Chungking Express" and that young police officer turned around and took off his cap... my heart went "POP!" love I thought to myself, what a cutey petooty!!

Plus, oh gosh! I wish I lived closer to the two of you to "talk shop"... I'm a copywriter for radio also... for about 10 years. And before that, I basically did the same thing in television (plus my numerous side jobs in print). However, years ago, I received my Bachelor of Science degree for Broadcast Journalism, because I immersed my studies in the technical aspects of the media, too. In this industry, you've got to be very well-rounded... meaning you're very valuable to the company you work for. So that means you have to be able to consistently and creatively write to meet those ungodly deadlines, yet also know how to use the equipment... like record (audio and video), edit and voice the work you do, too. Work does get pretty crazy at times... but, I feel I do my best under great pressure! My best record is getting copy written for a commercial, getting the client to approve the copy, record and produce it, then upload for broadcast in 15 minutes! PHEW!!!!

(Then I think I crawled under my desk and started to suck my thumb.) Ha Ha. JUST KIDDING!! Laughing

But, as a writer I have an unquenchable thirst for film, books, documentaries... EVERYTHING! It's just fuel to my creative fire! But it sounds like you're the same way, the only thing you need to work on is your shyness! (At least, I don't have that problem... maybe because I was born a Leo in the year of the Monkey!) Oh heavens!

OK, you can tell who the writers are in this bunch... blah, blah, blah! Computer Wink
